How to Use Lead Stop Blocks in Stained Glass Work
Begin by taping your stained glass pattern securely to your workboard so it remains flat and stable throughout your project.
Next, establish the perimeter by laying your outer lead came (U-channel) along the edges of the pattern. Use horseshoe nails to pin the lead firmly in place as you go.
Insert your first piece of glass carefully into the lead channel, ensuring it sits correctly against the pattern lines.
To keep the glass snug and prevent the lead from bowing or shifting, position a lead stop block against the exposed edge of the leaded glass. This acts as a temporary brace, holding everything firmly in alignment.
Secure the stop block by pushing a horseshoe nail into the workboard Through the hole, effectively locking the glass and lead in place.
Continue building your panel step by step. When you need to add the next piece of lead came, remove the stop block and nail temporarily, fit in the new lead and glass, then replace the stop block to maintain consistent pressure and a tight, accurate panel as it grows.
